Family Support Project

Our partners in Gomel, ‘Supporting Children Together’ have just completed a project which has helped 41 children with disabilities and their families to get the support they need, and make sure that the children can continue to live at home.

Following a successful project of this type funded by Unicef in 2018 -19, SCT received a grant from the US Embassy to carry out further work in three districts of Gomel Region – Buda-Koshilova, Chechersk and Dobrush.

Complex assessments were made of the child’s needs and a support plan established for each family;  a School for Parents was set up to improve the skills and understanding of mums and dads about their child’s condition and potential; seminars were held for professionals, including paediatricians; the staff worked with health, education and social services to encourage more joined up services; and parties and get togethers were organised for families so siblings could also have some attention.
