Solihull Group

Our Group in the Midlands

Solihull Group has invited children from Belarus each summer since 1999. For the last 6 years we have hosted teenagers in the age range 13 -15. They are selected by CIT, a Belarusian children’s cancer charity, all are in remission from various cancers many from leukemia. They have endured lengthy treatment and often operations including bone marrow transplants. Some of the children are from very remote, poor villages and some have lost a parent. They are accompanied by a doctor and interpreters.

They stay for two weeks in pairs with local host families, then together in residential accommodation at Lindsworth School, Kings Norton for a further two weeks. During their stay with the families, a varied and extensive activity schedule is organised including visits to the Severn Valley Railway, the seaside, sailing at Shustoke, Warwick Castle, Stratford and Drayton Manor  to name but a few.

When based at the school, days out are organised to places such as, Kenilworth Castle, Rolls Royce, Malvern Hills, cycling in the Peak District & West Midlands Safari Park. There are brilliant activities too, such as a Harley Davidson evening, swimming, football & boxing, massage, horse riding and craft.

We are a very active group organising various fundraising events, including meals out, Christmas Fundraisers, Skittles nights etc. We also receive some very generous donations, both personal and from local groups such as Rotary, Lions and GNO for which we are extremely grateful. A big thank you must also go to all those individuals and organisations that help provide the activities for our young visitors year after year!
