Do you have green fingers? Are you a competitive horticulturist? We are looking for the person who can grow the tallest sunflower this Summer. If you are up for this challenge, we will supply you with a packet of our top quality sunflower seeds renowned for their “beanstalk-like” genes and you can plant them in your own garden or in a pot if you live in a flat. Feed them, water them, talk to them, do whatever you have to to encourage them to grow as tall as possible. Take photos of them as they grow and we will share your success right here on this webpage and on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages too.
Buy the seeds and plant them as soon as possible to be in with the best chance of winning by our August 31st deadline when the competition will be closed and judging will take place by our resident horticulturist volunteer Andy Coupe. You will need to measure the height of your sunflower on this date and submit a photograph showing yourself stood beside it as proof! We will have great first, second and third prizes (to be announced) on offer for the tallest specimens!
Buy your seeds packets now from our online shop – only £5 for a packet of 10 super vigorous seeds.
For those of you who are not horticulturally gifted, we are running a parallel competition – to find out who has the artistic and crafting skills to create the most beautiful sunflower flower head. So, if you fancy having a go at making a beautiful flower out of any materials that you wish, or even painting one, then all you need to do is buy a £5 entry ticket from our online shop and get crafting. The closing date for the competition is the same and the winners will be chosen by Andy and his wife, Ellen, two of our longest-serving volunteers.
Whether you decide to grow a real sunflower or to craft a pretty flower head, the funds that we earn from the seed and ticket sales will help us to keep going with our vital work in Belarus and you will having the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a difference to the lives of young people who live there.
So, a big thank you in advance – get cracking and good luck!
