Foster care training programme

Following the training which Jean Holt and colleagues undertook in Gomel last year, we hope that the first children will be found suitable families very soon, under the new fostering scheme. A number of children from Ulookavye, an orphanage for children with mild learning difficulties, will be amongst the first to be fostered.

Jean is working in close liaison with West Sussex County Council, who are training in Minsk, and is being offered support from North Yorkshire County Council.
After completing the training of a second group of psychologists and social workers in September, Jean will work with Geoff Wright of Essex County Council to provide training for Directors of Children's Homes and the new Children's Shelters, which have just been established in many parts of Gomel Region.

In these shelters children will be prepared for return to their own families or fostering into a new family if possible, rather than entering an orphanage.
