Twenty six groups
hosted children this Summer and all have stories to tell about activities
enjoyed, friendships made and children sent back to Belarus stronger and
healthier. Two of the younsters in the Solihull group, Inna (pictured
right with her friend Natasha) and Konstantin, had both lost an eye due
to cancer.
Surgeons at Birmingham Childrens Hospital felt that much could be
done to improve the appearance of their prosthetic eyes, so they came
back in September for a further assessment and we hope to bring them both
for an operation next Summer.
Several of our groups host teenagers in remission from cancer. Endon and
Stoke hosted a group of eighteen 16 - 18 year olds for the sixth time
and felt that this was the best group they have ever had. The teenagers
live in families for the first fortnight and then spend two weeks at the
beautiful Cicely Haughton School at Wetley Rocks. The boys and girls fielded
two teams in the Its a Knockout fund rasing event the
group held in August, and the boys were over the moon when they won the
cup! Katya tackles one of the games.
Some groups prefer to host young children with their mums. Youlias
mum is unable to care for her, so she came to Evesham and Crewe with a
nurse from the Childrens Cancer Hospital. We plan to explore the
possibility this Autumn of arranging a foster family in Minsk for Youlia
(below), so that she does not have to live in an orphanage.
