Solihull

Oh what a lovely summer!

The sun shone in Solihull almost every day for the 4 weeks of the children’s visit this year (2011) and the smiles of the kids just kept beaming too.

This summer we had 2 groups of children.  The 12 younger children aged 8 to 10 years stayed with host families and we shared the 4 weeks with Wimborne group, hence the younger children were only with us for a fortnight which did seem terribly short.  We only just felt like we were getting to know them when we had to say our good-byes.

Our 12 other children were teenagers aged 15 and 16 years old and they stayed out at Springfield House School with Sasha, their head teacher and Ilya (10yrs old) Sasha’s son together with our 2 interpreters.

One of the highlights for me personally was the fun and laughter we all shared at our sports afternoon where we had 4 mixed teams of young and old, Belarusian and British.  They did the sack race, three-legged, egg and spoon and obstacle course.  Allan officiated with clipboard and whistle and Gill enthused us all with her creative games and first class demos.  London 2012 here we come! Everyone picked up a medal and a ‘confietti’.

Having such a large group of 25 Belarussian children in the first fortnight meant the 2nd fortnight could have felt really empty but this particular group of teenagers were our best ever as they really gelled as a group and had great fun together.  As usual the seaside was a huge hit, many of the children not having seen the sea before.  Valik, aged 16, learnt to swim whilst with us, thanks to Wendy, and whilst it took him all day to build his confidence he did swim in the sea at Barry Island and was absolutely thrilled with himself.  We built sandcastles, buried each other in the sand, played beach rounders, flew kites and had a football match against some local lads on the beach and Belarus beat England 8-6.

We’d like to thank all of our sponsors and volunteers who supported our group this year and made this holiday so special for these lovely children.  THANK YOU!
