Endon & Stoke

The Staffordshire based CCP UK group have been hosting teenagers and young children for the last 14 years and have found that the holiday makes a tremendous difference to the lives of the young people, both physically and psychologically.

The group which is based at St. Luke’s Church, Endon, Stoke-on-Trent , are very grateful for all the support given each year from local Churches, Rotary Clubs, WI’s, schools and businesses, without whom this Project would not be possible.

Summer 2011

Most of the young people who came to stay in Endon this summer were aged between 16 and  18 years old. They spent their first fortnight with families and then stayed at Cicely Haughton School in Wetley Rocks. From the start the young people gelled as a group and were a great support to each other. They particularly enjoyed outdoor activities like caoeing at Leamington Spa. The teenagers had never met before they came on the holiday, but they all became very good friends during their time together.

Doctors say that four weeks away from their contaminated homeland can boost a child’s damaged immune system for up to two years.

It has been a privilege to work alongside so many committed people who share our love and compassion for the young people from Belarus affected by the Chernobyl Disaster.   The whole visit went really well and the group were the best ever as usual!

We are very grateful to all those who support the work of the charity throughout the year as well as everyone who comes along and gets involved practically while our visitors are here.  Thank you to all our dedicated host families, everyone who donated cleaning items and toiletries, and all those who volunteered and came to help with the cleaning and cooking at Cicely Haughton School.

The young people benefited enormously both physically and psychologically and we saw a remarkable difference in them during their 4 weeks recuperative holiday.  They arrived as strangers to one another and returned home as good friends.  At the farewell party the teenagers wrote their personal thanks to host families on paper hearts:- “You are the parents from a fairy tale”, “I thank God that there are such people on earth.  You didn’t close your eyes to such problems like children’s oncology.  For the time I spent in England you helped me to forget all my worries and problems, thank you very much, you will always stay in my heart”, “Thank you for a marvellous time in England, I will never forget it”.

Busy Week for Our Endon Group!

Posted: June 3, 2010
Written by: Linda Walker

Every year the Endon & Stoke Group hold a Charity Dinner and Auction around the 26th April to commemorate the Nuclear Disaster.  This year they held the event on Friday 23rd April at The Three Horse Shoes Country Hotel in Blackshaw Moor.  It was an extremely successful event, with 97 people attending and raised just over £5,000.

The group have also continued to hold a coffee morning and luncheon over the last few years and this was held on Saturday 24th April at ST. Edwards Church in Leek, organised by group member Carole Lownds.  The event raised £470 with Barclays matching the amount.  Then in the evening of Saturday 24th April, a Barn Dance was held at Endon Village Hall, organised by Endon St. Luke’s Church, where the group are based.  Another successful event and great social evening was had by all who attended.

On Saturday May 15th, host family, Ingrid Boulton and friends organised a ladies sponsored bike ride, 26.5 miles along the canal towpaths around Stoke.  A very successful event but many sore bottoms at the finish line.

On Saturday May 22nd, On the hottest day of the year!  Kevin Waters and Andy Mellor, ran the White Peak Marathon to raise funds, Kevin and his wife Alexandra host teenagers with the group in the summer.  They both completed the marathon, totally exhausted in the heat, but must be congratulated for their enthusiasm and committment as they saw professional runners giving up after half way.  They have raised £2,000 between them for CCP.

In the evening on Saturday May 22nd, host family Suzan and Clive Kerridge held a Pimms Party and Quiz at their home and invited all their neighbours and friends locally and raised over £400.

In Endon we have a traditional welldressing event every year over the Whit Bank Holiday Weekend.  The local Endon CCP members were out again fundraising by holding a ’Spin the Wheel’ kiddies stall which involves washing and revitalising lots and lots of donated cuddly toys which are then given away as prizes.  Bank Holiday Monday was an early start for some of the team as they organised a Car Boot Sale setting up from 6 am, selling donated items of bric n brac.  Over the whole weekend the group managed to raise £1000.00.
