First Groups of Volunteers Return From Belarus

The first groups of volunteers have just returned from extremely successful visits to Ptich sanatorium, Zhuravichi orphanage and Vikov adult institution.

At Ptich, five volunteers and their translator worked hard for a fortnight to give the children and young adults a holiday to remember. They organised all kinds of fun activities including arts and craft sessions, water fights, treasure hunts and karaoke nights and accompanied the children on several interesting days out.

And another six volunteers and their translator worked equally hard at Zhuravichi and Vikov to bring a “holiday” to remember to those residents unable to go to Ptich. Activities here included outdoor sports, water and sand play, bead-making, tattoos, pampering, colouring, photo-printing, cookery and discos.

But, both groups of volunteers also provided copious amounts of something far more important than fun activities – their love and attention, sitting with, hugging and listening to the children and adults and generally making them feel valued.

All of the volunteers put everything they had into ensuring that the children and adults had a most memorable experience. The group leader at Ptich has since reported  “I spent one of the best holidays of my life in Ptich this year with the wonderful group of volunteers” and “All the time I had a feeling that I was working in a professional and well organised group”.  A great big thank-you must go to all of the volunteers for their energy and dedication and to Volunteer Coordinator Lynne Murphy whose tireless preparation over the months preceding the visits played such a vital role in ensuring that they were professionally organised and executed.
